colours

The choice of colours for paper and ink can affect more than the straightforward look of a page. Like all other design choices these carry additional significance. To take the example of woman’s magazines, at Christmas many of these will carry covers with lots of red on darker backgrounds than in the summer when paler colours are the norm and there is plenty of candy-floss pink lettering. The connotations here go beyond what looks good on the page in a particular month; the red brings with it the cherry mood of Christmas celebrations; the pastel remind of beaches and summer sunshine. These broad generalisations and ones which might make a brave art editor, anxious for a publication to stand out on the news-stand, think of adopting the unconventional approach.
